Greetings! I’m submitting my nonfiction picture book, POP, BOOM, WOW!: WHEN NATURE BLOWS UP, which is a suspense-filled journey through nature’s biggest and tiniest explosions. Readers will have a blast learning about beetle stink cannons, firecracker plants, and starry night skies. Back matter delves deeper into how these amazing natural events shape our world every day.
POP! BOOM! WOW! is a unique take on a science and nature topic that will appeal to fans of Animal Architects by Amy Cherrix and Chris Sasaki (Beach Lane Books, 2021) and inspire wonder at the natural world, as in Your Place in the Universe by Jason Chin (Neal Porter Books, 2020).
I studied journalism and creative writing at North Carolina State University. I’ve written more than fifteen nonfiction science, technology, nature, and SEL books for the library market. I am currently querying informational fiction, nonfiction, and fiction picture books and a middle grade manuscript.
I appreciate your consideration and hope to hear from you soon.
Excerpt:
BANG! POW! KABOOM!
Every day, nature…blows up!
Nature’s explosions, eruptions, and reactions shape our world.
Down in a sunny meadow, popping cress creep thick and green.
As the plant grows, its tiny seed pods swell and swell, until . . .
. . . POP! POP!
Faster than a blink, the pod bursts.
Seeds shoot in all directions.
Where seeds land, new plants grow.
What inspired you to write this story & what do you have in common with it:
Curiosity about nature! Growing up in Upstate New York, we used to love popping the seeds of plants while we played in the woods and along the creeks. Now as an adult, I showed my son a similar plant here in North Carolina. That got me thinking about all the ways nature uses kinds of explosions and how much fun a book like that would be to read and write!
