Dear PBParty judges, agents, and editors,
Thank you for making the PBParty event possible and for sharing your time and expertise. LYLA’S COLLECTION is a 391-word character driven picture book manuscript with SEL themes. Lyla needs a collection to share with her class, but panics when everyone else seems to have one but her. One idea after another flops until, with perseverance and a keen eye, she uncovers what hidden treasures lie within each of her flops.
LYLA’S COLLECTION highlights the creative spunk about collecting featured in Marthe Jocelyn’s book, HANNAH’S COLLECTION as well as the joy of collecting and sharing found in Peter H. Reynolds’ book, THE WORD COLLECTOR.
The topic of LYLA’S COLLECTION is close to my heart since I am a Forest Kindergarten teacher at Wasatch Nature School, and my students are natural collectors. I was selected for the 2021 SCBWI Utah/Idaho regional picture book mentorship program, and my story took first place in the 2021 Rate Your Story Cooking Up Culture picture book writing contest. I owe credit to SCBWI, Storyteller Academy, 12 x 12, and my critique groups for the development of this story and many other manuscripts.
Thanks again for this wonderful opportunity to submit via the PBParty event.
Excerpt:
“Don’t forget to bring your collections next Friday!” said Ms. Jones.
Lyla’s tummy flipped like a pancake.
On the way home, Marco bragged,
“My rock collection is awesome!”
“Wait till you see my giant T-Rex collection!” said Andrea.
“I’ve got 227 scratch and sniff stickers,” said Reece.
Lyla didn’t want to be left out.
“I have the best collection ever!”
“Of what?” said Andrea.
“It’s a surprise,” said Lyla.
