Dear Judges, Agents and Editors,
Happy (almost) spring and thank you for taking time to be part of this wonderful contest. I am a traditionally published author of #GirlPower books who is excited to submit my silly #GhoulPower manuscript for your consideration. GHOSTS (UN)WANTED is a 325-word “punny” bedtime story with a gentle message of believing in yourself, defying expectations, and following your dreams. The book will especially appeal to kids ages 4-8, but ghosts will take any and all fans they can get, because…
Hardworking ghouls can’t catch a break!
Everywhere they haunt these days, grownups are trying to put them out of business (“Ghosts are NOT real,” they say). But just when it’s looking like ghosts might vanish forever, two sassy little ghouls step up on a mission… Can they save their jobs and convince all the world to believe again?
I am a journalist, mom, and author of four (soon to be five) traditionally published books, which have been highlighted by PBS, Scholastic, A Mighty Girl, and more. I have numerous polished manuscripts in a various genres (humor, STEM, rhyme…) and an early chapter book in progress. I am seeking representation for my work and would love the opportunity to show you more.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration!
Excerpt:
[GhostB] PSSST! YOO-hoooo.
[GhostA] Or should we say BOOOOOO-hoooo.
Listen up, kids… You believe in ghosts, right?
Because no matter where we go these days, grownups ruin everything.
They’re always like “Blah, blah, blah… Go back to bed. Ghosts are NOT real.”
And now kids are starting to fall for it!!
[GhostB] She’s dead serious.
[Kid] DAD! There’s a ghost in the hall!
[Dad] Don’t worry. It’s just a shadow.
What inspired you to write this story & what do you have in common with it:
I was inspired to write this fun story when my 6-year-old became terrified of ghosts. She refused to believe me when I told her they weren’t real, so I decided to make them friendly and likable instead. This story will hopefully convince children like my daughter that ghosts are not scary, and they have better things to do with their “lives” than terrify children.
