PBParty Entry #5 : Across the Frozen Sea: An Arctic Fox’s Journey from Norway to Canada

March 22, 2021 Posted by Mindy Alyse Weiss PBParty Finalists 2021 4 Comments

GENRE: STEM, NF

WORDS: 465

Query:

Dear Reader,

Bundle up, you’re about to embark on a journey…

On a cold day in Norway, an arctic fox started walking, oblivious to nearby researchers who were tracking her every move. For seventy-six days they followed her record-breaking journey — through sub-zero temperatures, over glaciers, and across the frozen sea. Where she would stop was only part of her mystery.

This narrative non-fiction story combines the wonder of the natural world evident in Meeg Pincus’ WINGED WONDERS with the frozen landscape of Nick Dowson’s NORTH: THE AMAZING STORY OF ARCTIC MIGRATION, but focuses on the unique journey of an arctic fox across ecosystems.

I am a member of SCBWI, The 12×12 Picture Book Challenge, Storyteller Academy, two online critique groups, and my local writers’ guild. In 2020, I self-published a picture book titled BLOSSOM’S WISH, which is available on Amazon.

Per your guidelines, I have included the first 60-70 words of my 467-word manuscript ACROSS THE FROZEN SEA below.

Thank you for this chance.

Excerpt:

On the island of Spitsbergen, an arctic fox
pranced,
pounced,
and played.

While nearby, scientists
observed,
recorded,
and learned.

This little blue fox, and about 60 others like her, wore tracking collars so researchers could study their movements from afar.

One day, she did something that captured their attention…

In a valley by the sea, the arctic fox started walking. And she
walked,
and walked,
and walked.
