PBParty Entry #50: Night of the Raining Cheese {ART}

March 24, 2024 Posted by Mindy Alyse Weiss PBParty Finalists 2024 9 Comments

GENRE: *Character Driven, Humor, Fantasy

WORDS: 296

Query:

Dear Agents and Editors:

Thank you so much for giving your time to PBParty this year. I’m excited to submit my 296-word picture book, NIGHT OF RAINING CHEESE. Like Too Much Glue by Jason Lefebvre, this story will delight readers ages 5-8 who find humor in loving something so much the obsession is misunderstood.

Wendy is a big mouse with a bigger appetite for cheese. She has snacked on every kind within reach and now dreams of tasting the farthest one of all — the moon. When her lofty ambition falls short, Wendy is ready to give up the cheesy life forever until she realizes that the seemingly unreachable snack is closer than she thinks.

I have been creating art in multiple mediums as a hobby for most of my life. As a designer by day, I have been developing a passion for storytelling and made a jump into children’s books with a focus on illustration. Currently, I am working part-time at the Boys and Girls Club to help me learn more about the kids I’m writing for. I’m a member of SCBWI, enrolled at Storyteller Academy, and an active member of three critique groups. My online portfolio can be viewed at ricxter.com, which showcases some of my work.

Thank you again for your time and attention.

Excerpt:

The town had tasted many kinds of cheese with the help of Wendy, but never the moon.
It was too high, even for the greatest mouse in town.
They had all slurped from the Nacho rivers.
Tunneled more holes into the Swiss mountains.
And even cracked the tops of Parmesan.
Their tales of snacking were legendary, and Wendy wanted a piece of the moon next!

What inspired you to write this story & what do you have in common with it:

The idea for the story came when my girlfriend and I were trying to figure out how many kraft cheese singles it would take to go to the moon. We were having so much fun when I realized the event only needed a character ambitious enough to build the tower (which we guessed would be around 3,784,176,000 slices of singles).

When I was little, I used to take these Kraft cheese slices and fold them, which made them into half slices, then quarter, and it was my goal to make as many pieces of these little cheese squares as possible and stack them onto one another in a very tiny cheese tower. Then eat them one at a time. It took me at least an hour. I believe this mouse and me could be the best of friends.
    If you think we’d be a fit…
