Dear Judges, Editors and Agents,
I hope you are having a fantastic day! I am the author/illustrator of THE FLAMINGO HOUSE, a picture book that is aimed for children ages 5-8 and is complete at 224 words. It tells the story of May, a girl who has pink everything, except for a pink pet. She uses grit and determination to finally achieve her goal.
When May sees her first flamingo, she must have one. She tries to build the perfect birdhouse to attract the perfect flamingo, but when typical birdhouses aren’t working she must reset and discover how flamingos live.
On the playground is where I spend most of my days as a recess aide for my local school. It is an enjoyable job that allows me to be in a position to know hundreds of kids and their amazing personalities. When I’m not picking mulch out of my shoes, I’m working on my art and writing. I am an active member of SCBWI, Julie Hedlund’s 12×12 Picture Book Challenge and Storyteller Academy. I have an honorable mention for illustration and text in PB Party 2024 (hosted by Mindy Alyse Weiss). I’ve had a few pets, but never a pet flamingo.
Excerpt:
I saw the most magnificent creature today.
It was tall.
It stood on one leg.
And…
It was pink! [flamingo]
I have a pink bed, a pink umbrella and pink shoes.
I have pink EVERYTHING!
Except a pink pet.
I need to have one!
And I won’t give up until I do.
Luckily, I have a plan.
I will build the perfect birdhouse and attract the perfect flamingo.
What inspired you to write this story & what do you have in common with it:
My children have been asking for a new pet since our cat died. They have been asking for every kind from ferret to skunk to pig and beyond. When they brought up flamingos, I wondered how someone would even keep a flamingo as a pet and how would you come across one to own. *You cannot keep a flamingo as a pet in the United States.
