What is PBParty?

September 20, 2020 Posted by Mindy Alyse Weiss PB, PBParty, Writers 16 Comments

Here’s the 2024 PBParty Annual Contest info!

PBParty is so many awesome things!

*An annual contest to help connect unagented writers & author/illustrators with agents & editors.

*Fun Twitter chats.

*Motivating Twitter challenges…write a new PB, meet new Twitter friends & critique partners!

Annual PBParty Contest

I love hosting the annual PBParty contest every March and happy dance for all the wonderful success stories.

PBParty New Draft Challenge & Critique Train

I LOVE cheering each other on to write a new picture book draft each month. So many writers are hungry for critiques. It’s tons of fun to challenge each other to keep writing new manuscripts…and to give and receive a critique (it can be the new draft, after revising it a bit, or any PB you’d like fresh eyes on.

Once you’ve read the FAQ, here’s a direct link to the Google Doc. NOTE: You can only add your name to the doc on the day of the challenge AFTER you write your new PB draft.

You can flesh out your idea, plot your PB, make character sketches, get your file ready, etc. ahead of time, but DON’T start writing your new PB until challenge day.

PBParty Twitter Chats

We have fun Twitter chats using the #PBParty hashtag. Weekly features include Celebration Sunday and Motivation Monday. Let’s make goals together and celebrate both small and large successes!

These are usually posted at 9 am EST. You can find them on my Twitter and the #PBParty hashtag. Don’t forget to add #PBParty to your responses so everyone will see them! It’s a great chance to interact with other writers and illustrators.

Contests & Giveaways!

Keep your eyes open for contests–often to celebrate with authors and illustrators of new picture books. It’s great to see what’s being published and to support authors and illustrators.

Plus…you could win signed books and critiques!

This sounds fun if I can find the right place I’ll be delighted to join. I’m new at Twitter and I’ve missed a few activities because I didn’t find them.

I shout out all PBParty activities on my Twitter page: https://twitter.com/MindyAlyseWeiss

The Celebration Sunday and Motivation Monday tweets go out at 9 am EST on those days…but you can reply at any time and include #PBParty so others will see it, too. And feel free to like/comment on what other people say. You can see the PBParty thread here: https://twitter.com/hashtag/PBParty?src=hashtag_click&f=live

Here’s info about the New Draft Challenge & Critique Train–the next one is February 18 all day EST and I’ll have a tweet up at midnight, plus the Google doc to sign once you write a PB. If you have trouble adding your name, let me know and I’d be happy to add you. https://mindyalyseweiss.com/pbparty-new-draft-challenge-critique-train-faq/

And here’s info about the PBParty annual contest–submission day is March 1st. https://mindyalyseweiss.com/pbparty-annual-contest/

Two of the Success Stories show queries that worked: https://mindyalyseweiss.com/pbparty-success-stories/

A few of the entries from the 2020 PBParty contest are still up on Michelle’s website: https://michellehauckwrites.com/contest/picture-book-party-spring-2020/

Hi Mindy, thank you for hosting the Picture Book Party, I’m looking forward to submitting! Question: Are all finalists’ query, 60-70 word sample, and illustrations going to be posted publicly? Where will they be posted and how long will they be on the site for? Thank you so much, sorry if I’ve missed it somewhere.

Mindy, thank you so much for hosting the PB Party Critique Train. Just when I was feeling down about writing, a generous author connected with me and gave me brilliant tips for my manuscripts. Her comments lifted my spirits and boosted my confidence. And this would not have been possible without you.

May I submit to both the writing and illustration contests for the PB Party Contest?

Hi Rebecca. 🙂 You’ll enter the author/illustrator Google form which includes everything on the writer form plus places to share two illustrations. Then, you’ll be considered for both the final round with your query, excerpt, and what connects you to the manuscript plus your illustrations…and you’ll also be considered to have 2 illustrations in the Illustration Showcase.

What is the total word count for the actual manuscript? I know we are entering the first 60-70 words and then I saw not under 200 words… so, what is the actual manuscript word count limit (200? no limit?)
