Dear Agents and Editors,
I am excited to share my picture book, What Is This?
This gentle, imaginative story follows a curious rabbit who discovers a mysterious sock and sets out to figure out what it might be. Each animal friend offers a wildly creative answer, from a trunk warmer to a cozy bed. While Rabbit searches for the “correct” answer, the sock takes on new possibilities with each idea.
What Is This? celebrates curiosity, creativity, and embracing different perspectives.
The book features an interactive format with flaps that fold out in different directions, revealing each animal’s unique traits and inviting readers to engage their imaginations. I am also open to adapting the story to a non-flap format.
I am an author-illustrator with a BFA in Illustration, concentrating in bookmaking, and graduated summa cum laude. I have worked with clients including Creative Teaching Press, Scholastic, Pearson, Highlights, McGraw Hill, and Cricket Media (Babybug).
My portfolio is available at https://autumnsketchbook.wixsite.com/autumn-sketchbook.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Excerpt:
Rabbit found a piece of green, furry fabric with yellow polka dots.
It looked pretty and smelled like… oh.
Rabbit couldn’t figure out what it was, so she decided to ask her friends.
“Do you know what this is?” Rabbit asked Elephant.
[Only part of Elephant is visible; the fold-out shows its size and the sock’s use.]
“No, I don’t,” Elephant said. “But it could be a nice trunk warmer.”
What inspired you to write this story & what do you have in common with it:
I was inspired to write What Is This? by my experience moving to the United States as a first-generation immigrant. I initially felt unsure in a new environment and worried about fitting in or doing things the “right” way. Over time, I realized that there isn’t a single “right” answer. You can explore, imagine, and become whoever you want.
Rabbit’s curiosity and openness reflect this journey, and through the story, I hope readers feel reassured that it’s okay not to have one “right” answer, to embrace different perspectives, and to create their own possibilities.
